eviction time frame?

Postby billiam8 » Sun May 18, 2003 11:35 am

I have a friend who lives in an unregulated Manhattan apartment, and hasn't paid any rent in six or seven months (very long story and to get in to it would distract from the main question in this post).

His landlord calls him from time to time, with general angry requests for rent, but so far the subject of eviction hasn't been raised. I'm a bit surprised by this, and my question simply is: how long can the rent go unpaid before the landlord can initiate evication proceeding?

One of my previous LLs used to start the eviction process whenever rent wasn't received in two weeks. Then he'd add legl costs to the bill.

Either your friend's LL is too cheap to pay a lawyer or there's more going on here.

A landlord can start eviction proceedings the first day that rent is late, and I cannot imagine that a lawyer is cheaper than going without rent for months on end, so I can only imagine that there is something else going on here.
