Individual rents > stated total rent: which is right?

Postby Tenant567 » Tue Sep 30, 2008 9:18 pm

Hi all -

Four of us live in a 4-bdr apartment, and we each have separate leases with the landlord. Each lease lists both the total rent for the apartment and what that tenant is responsible for. The catch is that the sum of our individual rents is greater than the total (which is the same on all four). We signed our leases at different times, so the LL definitely could have adjusted the total amount on the last lease that was signed to reflect the actual total of what we pay. One of the amounts on each lease is clearly wrong. Can we reduce our individual rents to match the stated total, or would the LL win this argument in housing court?

Thanks.
