Notice from Landlord?

Postby grapp » Mon Nov 24, 2008 5:47 pm

I live in a 3 family house (and unfortunately so does the landlord). If he should decide that he does not want to renew my lease in January (after 11 years), how much notice is he required to give me?
Thanks in advance for any reply.

He should give you any notice in writing. Check your lease and see if it has a clause about lease renewals or non-renewals. I'm not sure of the time involved with a non-regulated apartment but I believe it would be at least 30 days, which of course is not enough time to find an apartment. If you stay past your lease period, you would then be a month to month tenant, until you can find a place. Since you've been there 11 years, how has he given you your renewals in the past? Do you anticipate he won't renew for some reason?

I had a LL many years ago, who gave us as much time as we needed to find a new apartment after he would not renew our lease. We had two small children at the time and it took us about 3 months to find a place. I don't think he wanted to go to court.
