Fumes in Apartment - grounds to break lease?

Hi,
I recently moved into a rental apartment building on the lower east side, that had been renovated by the owner. The apartment renos were done about 2 - 3 weeks ago. As of today, there is still a strong paint / polish smell that permeates the apartment. Also, when we run a hot shower, there is some chemical reaction that causes a very strong chemical odor to fill the entire apartment. The contractor and super have no idea what causes it and i'm worried for the health of my family. What liability does the management company have and will i be able to break the lease without a huge legal fight?
