Town Hall Meeting - Pet Law- 4/18/2005

Postby Cranky Tenant » Sun Apr 17, 2005 3:16 pm

Just received this from the Humane Society

TITLE: Monday Night- Urge Speaker Miller to Pass Pets in Housing Bill!

There will be a Town Hall Meeting this Monday evening, April 18th, held by
Speaker Gifford Miller and Council Member Eva Moskowitz.

WHEN: Monday April 18 - 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

WHERE: P.S. 77 Lower Lab School Auditorium
1700 Third Avenue (at 96th St.)

The floor will be open to questions from community members for most of the meeting. This is an opportunity to let Speaker Miller know that you want him to pass the Pets in Housing Bill, Intro. 189-A . (Note that Moskowitz is already a sponsor of the bill.)

Although Miller is stating that there are not enough votes to get the bill passed, the fact is
there are more than 30 sponsors of the bill, more than enough to get the bill passed.

He, as all legislators, depends on votes from constituents, so he needs to hear from a LARGE amount of people that this bill is important and his getting it passed into law is important to them as voters.

Intro. 189-A states that once a landlord or a co-op board waives a no-pet clause, the tenant can replace a pet who has died or is no longer living in their apartment with another pet of the same species. The waived no-pet clause remains for the entire tenancy.

If passed, this bill will:

- open up thousands of homes for homeless animals waiting in shelter cages;
- largely decrease the all-too-common act of people abandoning their animal companions to shelters (or the streets) because they are being threatened with eviction;
- enhance the lives of so many people who want to continue living with animal companions, including the elderly, the ill, and those living alone.

PLEASE ATTEND THIS MEETING and have Miller hear from large numbers of constituents who want this bill passed.

Please email me if you have any questions. J<mailto:JoyceLFriedman@aol.com>oyceLFriedman@aol.com

Hope to see you Monday night!
