Resources for Loft Tenants

Postby Anna » Sun Jan 18, 2004 1:14 am

Some tenants living in lofts are protected by Article 7-C of the Multiple Dwelling Law, aka the Loft Law. Some are not but may still be protected by Rent Stabilization. The Loft Law is due to expire (again) this spring, 5/31/2004: there are bills in the state assembly to renew this law and to extend the benefits to those buildings that did not have at least 3 residential units during the window period which ended in 1981.

The Loft Board, including a list of IMD buildings:

The prime source for loft tenants:

Lower Manhattan Loft Tenants (LMLT) is a non-profit, voluntary union of tenants who work together to protect safe housing in live/work spaces (ie: lofts). Established in 1978, LMLT's original terrain was lower Manhattan, SoHo, and TriBeCa; today it is a coalition including Chelsea Loft Dwellers and Brooklyn Loft Tenants that serves nearly all loft residents in three boroughs of New York City.

Brooklyn Loft Tenants may or may not still be a seperate org: check with local community groups.

Also, a group named Brooklyn Waterfront Loft Tenants participated in the hearing by NY state DEC re All City Paper Fibers about a year ago. This may or may not be the same group.

A treatise on recent court decisions concerning lofts from a landlord-lawfirm, 2003:

(Some cases cited in this report are summarized in TN's Housing Court Decisions http://www.tenant.net/Court/Hcourt/
All published cases can be found in law libraries)
