Find out if Bldg accepts Section 8 ?

Postby Brooklyn Babe » Sat Apr 13, 2002 2:46 pm

I don't know much about Section 8. Without asking Mgmnt. directly, is there an online method of checking to see if a building accepts Section 8 applicants? I checked www.nyc.gov, but couldn't find anything...Thanks

Find the answer myself:
For a statewide search of buildings listed under Section 8 program go to:
http://www.hud.gov/sec8/sec8.cfm
For NY specific go to:
http://www.hud.gov/cgi-bin/section8/sec8city.pl?statename=NY:New%20York&sitelocated=sec8/&searchpagename=sec8.cfm

I realize this post is decades old!

BUT same question this time around!

There has been a new Housing Choice Voucher Section 8 lottery late May 2021. For those selected, how can they find out if their building accepts Section 8 (now called: HCV) without directly asking landlord.

Those two link in this thread are broken. Contact with the HCR/HCV Sec 8 program is all automated now.

Any link to list of buildings accepting such vouchers?

Thanks

Sid discrimination is illegal so it shouldn't matter whether a building claims it doesn't accept. The only exception is for single family homes and two family where the owner and/or their family lives. The OP post is over 20 years old. There was an ithaca renting case so we don't know if this can change.

I assume you mean "Source of Income" discrimination. Please spell out acronyms as not all of us are that smart. :)

Not to have an end-less maze of this topic, but certain "section 8" buildings are project-vouchers, in other words the section 8 status is tied to a building much like nycha and not a voucher that you can take from apartment to apartment or rather building to building if outside the development.,obviously different but could confuse peope when people mention "section 8 buildings". The rental assistance program via nycha is design to convert from that (technically section 9 to section 8).

Allow me to elaborate to avoid confusion.

The NYCHA section 8 rental assistance program is a voucher program to use with landlords.
The Nycha section 8 "rental assistance demonstration program" or RAD converts nycha public housing (section 9 to project baesd section 8), certain "section 8 buildings" are where the subisdy/section 8 is tied to the building or apartment unit rather than portable from one building or city to city. Certain private developers may also have buildings that are project section 8 and there were fears of developers leaving the program (great example is starett city now called spring creek towers)

Apologies for the possible mix-up. Many public housing tenants are leery of RAD because while nycha owns/leases out the property, a private company usually manages the building. Often-times the private company raises concerns that tenants may be harassed, eviction, expect a different service, etc.

For example, wavecrest is one company that operates RAD buildings, and they have a history of tenants not being happy with them and for great reason. Wavecrest appears to operate many buildings that have rent stabilized units (not necessarily all new buildings) so skepticism is warranted.
