Got 30-day notice from co-op board as illegal tenant

I'm subletting from a friend who is a co-op shareholder, with a future plan for me to buy the apartment from him.
He now received a 30 day notice to cure and evict me.

I know I can't fight it, but would like to have more time.

My friend the shareholder sent a letter asking the board to give us more time, 2-3 months, to either start the buying process, or have me move out.

If the board declines the request - what can I legally do to get another 3 months? WITHOUT hurting my friend's standing, as he does want to sell the place, either to me, or otherwise.
