Need Advice in Ulster County

Postby law0312 » Fri May 31, 2002 3:46 am

This past Tuesday, our complex was sold. The landlords raised our rent by 50%, took away ammenties like garbage removal, and not making any repairs like plumbing problems, electical problems, tried to get the old landlord to lie saying that the contents that were in storage were originally hers, not the tenants except for 2 items, a refridgerator that we were waiting to be repaired for over 6 months, and a broken down lawnmower. The rest were a fellow tenant, and my husbands. So, we had the sheriff talk to our former landlord, and she backed us up. This is just to start off with. They have told so many other lies to the other tenants that they could not claim with us.

We are month to month tenants, without a lease.
Our rent cycle has been based on the 15th of the month, and they are demanding a months rent on the 1st. Is this legal? Don't they have to wait until the fifteenth? When are they allowed to raise the rent like that? If damages to the apartment were not caused by us, but by the maintenance man, even though they are new landlords, can they take away our security deposit?

Just another note, we have given our 30 day notice. We do not want to stay here any longer because we don't want to rent from such dishonest landlords.
