NY LAW?

Help! My room mate and i rent an apartment in my landlors building, and it is a month to month thing w/o a contract. After 2 months, he suddenly decided that we could have no guests, espically overnight, and rudely kicked my roommate's boyfriend off the property. We have never caused noise or damage, never had a party, etc. My questions:
Does he have the right to regulate daytime guests?
Does he have the right to regulate overnight guests?
How many overnights does it take for a guest to be considwered "living there"?
Where can i get a copy of these laws?
Is there a hotline I can call to ask questions like these?
