New landlord asking for a rent increase? (LOS ANGELES)

Postby jozeref9 » Wed Aug 30, 2006 10:22 pm

hi there i want to thank you ahead of time.

I live in los angeles city. The apartment complex in which i live in has rent control. I used to pay 800/month with the old landowner. The apartment complex was sold about 1 week ago to a new landlord. The landlord just visited me and ask for more rent money. He wanted me to sign a new lease and pay 1000/month. Is that legal? does he have the right to do that?

any help would be greatly appreciated

thnx

See this pamphlet providing an overview of tenant protections under the City of Los Angeles Rent Stabilization Ordinance: http://www.ci.la.ca.us/lahd/geninfo.pdf

There is nothing there to indicate that a new landlord is entitled to a special rent increase.

The Los Angeles Housing Department, which administers the Rent Stabilization Ordinance, has a website at http://www.ci.la.ca.us/lahd/
