Short-term apartment share

Postby cms14 » Sun Sep 08, 2002 6:52 pm

I am planning to share an apartment short-term (Sept. 15-Oct. 31). The leaseholder has sent me a roommate agreement that requests, in addition to the month and a half rent, a security deposit in the amount of one month's rent.

Is this over the top? I'm willing to pay $100 as a security deposit since my stay is short, but $800 seems excessive.

Is this legal? Thanks for your help.

you might try asking why the deposit is so large, the leasholder might not have thought about it the reality of your situation. or maybe he's trying to rip you off. if you pay the full deposit make sure it is clear in the agreement that you will get it all back in 30 days (unless you seriously damage the apartment or something). the leaseholder probably thinks he's protecting himself, but you might be able to come to an understanding with him that is a little more easy on you, esp since it looks like you're gonna be new in town.
