I need to terminate my lease in central New York before I have occupied the apartment. I have not sent any kind of deposit, but I have signed a lease. I have spoken to the landlords, but they imply if it can't be rented, then I will be responsible for the whole amount. Is this true, and what are my options?
The same thing happened to me in NJ. As it was, I signed a lease but decided not to move in and I move to Clifton Park, NY. I was still responsible for a partial amount of a month's rent because there was some lag time for the landlord to market the property, etc.. I'm sure it's different in NY but this is what happened to me.
