Manhattan CB4 Newsletter                         January 1999

In the Neighborhood
 
Muhlenberg Library on West 20th Street  The Muhlenberg library has moved a
fifth of its collection to the Andrew Heiskell Library for the Blind and
Physically Challenged, located at 40 West 20th Street, while the Muhlenberg's
building undergoes renovation.  Many recent books, videos and audio tapes are
available.  Library users are invited to stop by the new site.  

Van Service to the Hudson Park Library will begin on Tuesday, January 5,
1999 for seniors and other library users who have difficulty traveling to
alternate libraries while the Muhlenberg is renovating.  Admission to the van
will be by library card.  The van will leave every Tuesday from the Penn South
Senior Center located at 290 Ninth Avenue.  It will depart at 9:45 a.m., 10:30
a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.  The van will return from the Hudson Park
Library at 10:15 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. 

Beacon Program Opens in Chelsea  The Hudson Guild has been awarded a grant
by the City of New York to create a Beacon at the O'Henry Learning Center,
located at 333 West 17th Street.  A Beacon is a community center located in a
school building, and it uses space during the after-school, evening and
weekend hours.  The Beacon will provide activities and programs for members of
the school and the surrounding community.  The first component of the Beacon
is an after-school program for middle school students.  Programs for high
school students and others will commence in the coming months.  For more

Register for Free Adult Classes   The New York City Board of Education is
registering adults for GED, Spanish GED, and Basic Education courses.
Registration for Monday and Wednesday GED and Basic Education Classes will be
held every Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the High School of Fashion, 225 West 24th
Street.  Registration for Saturday classes for all courses will be every
Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Norman Thomas High School, 111 East 33rd Street.  For

Around the City

Sexual Harassment Forum   If you are experiencing sexual harassment in the
workplace, come to this overview of state and local laws.  Learn what sexual
harassment is and how to handle it.  This free forum will be held Wednesday,
January 13, 1999 at 6:00 p.m.  For additional information call (888) 979-7765,
ext. 42.

Children's Scholarship Fund will provide partial scholarships so that
approximately 2,000 New York City children may attend private or parochial
schools.  Eligible families will be selected by lottery.  For more

Providers Sought for Universal Prekindergarten Program  The Board of
Education is seeking early childhood program providers in each Community
School District.  For more information, call Community School District #2 at
(212) 330-9400.

Helping Alliance is a coalition of ten telephone hotlines and crisis
intervention services.  Through its Youth Outreach Project, posters and wallet
cards are being distributed to make New York youth and their families aware of
