Dear Hell's Kitchen Friends,
THE CITY COUNCIL RACE IS NOW UNDERWAY
Hell's Kitchen Online is endorsing Christine Quinn for City Council. In the coming weeks, you'll
see many Clinton/Hell's Kitchen residents out working for Christine and we need your help.
Throughout the Eighth Avenue/Theater Subdistrict Zoning process, Christine exerted the leadership
we would expect of our City Council member. We acknowledge that two other candidates, Aubrey Lees
and William Murawski were also involved in the Eighth Avenue issue, but there can be only one City
Council member elected and in our view, Christine Quinn went the extra mile. She helped Clinton
residents get their views to the City Council leadership, including Walter McCaffrey of the Zoning
Committee and she stayed with us continuously for two days at City Hall for meetings with City
Council reps, CSDC and the community boards.
On December 7th, about 200 Clinton/Hell's Kitchen residents attended the City Council Candidate
Forum sponsored by the Clinton Special District Coalition (CSDC). The candidates were asked many
questions on Clinton issues ranging from overdevelopment, the Eighth Avenue Zoning, housing,
education, health, bus traffic and other Quality of Life issues.
After the forum, the CSDC membership voted Christine Quinn as its Preferred Candidate:
Christine Quinn 20 votes
Aubrey Lees 4 votes
Christopher Lynn 2 votes
Carlos Manzano no votes
Bill Murawski no votes
This race will not be an easy one. Christopher Lynn, a former commissioner in the Guiliani
administration, is running for the seat along with others. Lynn has raised a great deal of money
and is being supported by conservative landlord-development forces in this city who would love to
get their hands on this seat. We will be successful in defeating him and in keeping this seat
responsive to our community ONLY IF YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS GET INVOLVED IN THIS RACE.
You may know Christine Quinn from her five years as Tom Duane's Chief of Staff. She oversaw
constituent services and worked closely with neighborhood residents. Before that, Christine was
the lead organizer for the Housing Justice Campaign and most recently Christine served as
Executive Director of the NYC Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project. Christine has a slew of
endorsements (you can read about these and much more on http://hellskitchen.net). Our sister site,
TenantNet is also endorsing Christine and many NYC tenant leaders are supporting her.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Because this will be a special election, volunteering your time and helping garner enough petition
signatures to place Christine on the ballot is critical to this campaign's success. Beginning on
January 1-4 -- depending on when the Mayor calls the special election -- we will need to collect
8,000 signatures from registered voters in this district in 12 days. It CAN be done with your
help.
Take the first step in making Christine's election a reality by filling in the form below. Let us
know how often you can help petition and when you are available to do so. We're suggesting 12
hours within those 12 days, perhaps in 3 or 4 hour shifts. Petitioning can be done either by
gooing door-to-door in your building or by standing or tabling on street corners. We also need to
people to join the "PETITIONING ALERT COMMITTEE". This committee will be comprised of those
willing to take the first day of petitioning off from work because we need to start strong and
fast.
The Quinn campaign will supply the clipboards and petitions (with specific instructions). Contact
your building neigbors as soon as you can. Although the petitions will not be printed until the
Mayor calls the election, what you can also do now is ask your neighbors to hold their signature
for the Quinn petition and not sign petitions for other candidates (they can sign only one
petition).
If you're petitioning in the streets (it's never too cold in Hell's Kitchen), we are working
closely with the Quinn campaign to schedule times and places, and we'll help get the materials to
you and place you with other volunteers.
Join us in becoming a HELL'S KITCHEN BUILDING CAPTAIN -- getting in contact with your neighbors
about the Quinn campaign, going door-to-door and asking your neighbors to sign petitions,
distributing DEAR NEIGHBOR LETTERS as the campaign moves forward, etc.
As soon as the Mayor calls the election, we will be in the streets and helping you in your
buildings with petitions to put Christine Quinn on the ballot. If you have any questions about
Christine, please call her campaign at 212/924-9104 and read the information on Hell's Kitchen
Online.
Christine thanks you in advance for your support.
