PUBLIC HEARING:
BSA Variance for 352 West 52nd Street (Stiles Market)
Manhattan Community Board No. 4 will discuss the application for the legalization of the use of a
temporary tent structure as a food store. A variance is required because the food store (Use
Group 6) is not allowed in an R8 zoning district (BSA No. 175-99 BZ). Simone Sindin, Co-Chair of
the Clinton Land Use and Zoning Committee, will chair the hearing.

WORKSHOPS FOR SINGLE PARENTS -- The Beacon Parents Program and the Single Parent Resource Center
present a series of Monday night workshops for single parents. There will be a full program of
parent and child activities on October 4, 18 and 25. The workshops are free, but call ahead to

PENN STATION PRESENTATION -- Alex Washburn of the Pennsylvania Station Redevelopment Corp. will be
giving a presentation before Community Board 4's Chelsea Preservation and Planning Committee on
Monday, October 18, 1999. The meeting will be held at 343 8th Avenue opposite 27th Street at
6:15pm.
DANCE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE -- The West Side Dance Project is offering full and partial dance

GARDEN HOURS -- The Juan Alonzo Garden on 11th Avenue and 51st Street is open Saturdays from 10am

THE POWER OF THE PHOTOGRAPH -- An exhibit about the ability of the photograph to effect social
change will be at the Hudson Guild's Lowe Gallery September 2 - October 25, 1999. The gallery,
located at 441 West 26th Street, will be open Mondays and Fridays from 4:00-7:00pm and by
appointment.
Around the City
MEDICARE HEALTH FAIR -- Empire Medicare Services, the local Medicare carrier, is holding a free
health fair October 7, 1999 from 9:30am to 12:00pm. The fair will be on East 43rd Street between
1st and 2nd Avenues. There will be free health screenings, Medicare and health information and

THE CENSUS BUREAU IS SEEKING PARTNERS -- To effectively conduct the census, the Census Bureau
wants to work with community groups that will provide space and volunteers for questionnaire
assistance centers, tailor appropriate messages to community residents, and recruit workers

LOW COST OR FREE BREAST AND CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING -- Women living or working in Manhattan who
are over 40 and underinsured or uninsured are eligible for cancer screening through the Manhattan
Breast Health Partnership. Those with abnormal findings will be offered diagnostic testing. If
you have not had a mammogram in the past two years, call (212) 586-8700 for a referral.
