DEMONSTRATE AGAINST NEW YORK APPLE TOURS -- SATURDAY MORNING
New York Apple Tours (NYAT) has been fouling our air for years and getting
away with it. New York City's asthma rates, especially in children,
continue to soar, and deaths from asthma are on the rise.
When: Saturday, February 5
8:30 A.M. (morning)
Where: NYAT's 8th Ave. and 47th Street terminal
Sponsored by 'We Can't Breathe', State Senator Tom Duane, and the Clinton
Special District Coalition. (CSDC). Leaflets in 6 languages (English,
Chinese, Spanish, French, Chinese and German) will be handed to to tourists.
In September, NYAT pleaded guilty in a federal criminal case of lying
about the age of their imported sightseeing double-decker buses to avoid EPA
emissions and DOT safety standards.
NYAT is scheduled to appear before the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA)
on Thursday, February 10, 2000 (unless it's postponed again) to "show cause
why [their] license to operate sightseeing buses should not be revoked or
suspended". Call Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jules Polonetsky at
(212) 487-4401, and tell him that NYAT must not keep their DCA license.
In 1995, NYAT appeared before the DCA after being caught switching DCA
licenses. NYAT had only 28 licenses for 40 buses. Although a DCA spokesman
had said the department would try to revoke NYAT's operating license, NYAT
got off with a $100,000 fine.
In December, the NYC Department of Transportation revoked NYAT's permit to
park their busses on the west side of 8th Avenue. Despite the permit revocation,
they continue to park and the NYPD looks the other way.
