With the Gubernatorial elections only three weeks away, every tenant should remember that Pataki is responsible for the conversion of DHCR, from a state agency designed to protect tenants' rights (or at the very least, stay a responsible agency), to a unit that is aggressively pushing the landlords' agenda.
All of us should not forget that our rights have been stripped away under last year's Pataki-Bruno (and their mentor D'amato) assault on our rights as tenants. After the new law was passed in June 1997, Pataki even had the nerve to send every resident a pamphlet, shamefully claiming that the new law he pushed through will benefit the tenants.
As an alternative to Pataki, there are at least two other viable candidates on the ballot.
Every tenant should do his/her outmost to actively discusss this coming election with the neighbors, making sure that every eligibile New York State resident do go out and vote come election day. Last year,we were organized, and we showed that tenants do have muscles. Yet this year, strangely, none of last year's tenants leaders have been heard from.
If Pataki gets re-elected, we will have only ourselves to blame, for being apathetic and indifferent.
