I moved out of my apartment in mid-July, and now it is late October, and still
my landlords have not returned our security deposits. They say that they WILL,
but they just keep stalling and now its been over 3 months! I know that they
are doing this because they are just dishonest crooks who think that maybe we
will just let them get away with it, but as soon as i file a suit against them
in court, they will send me a check. My question is, is their any PENALTY for
waiting all this time to pay back this money? I know that in Michigan, if a
landlord does this they must pay double or triple damages. Do we have any such
protection in New York?? If not, what would stop any dishonest landlord from
just WAITING until the court orders them to pay, and taking advantage of the
interest?
