A word of advice to you, though not to cause you any un-due panic:
Although there are a multitude of laws governing the "proper" eviction of any tenant in the City of New York, there are those landlords who will knowingly and purposely choose to disregard them.
Your landlord might be one of these and you may find yourself with improper service of necessary documentation. For example, you may come home to find a 72-hour eviction posted on your door and may have not received any previous notification.
This can cause you a great deal of un-necesary distress. However, you will also have a great deal of recourse in court. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING you do receive.
I am not stating that your landlord may be one of those to whom I refer. However, well informed is well armed.
Best of luck to you.
Best idea: take what money you have now and begin seeking another place in which to live. Landlords can be treacherous when they beilieve there's gain in it.
